Training

“There might be nothing in the world that packs as many life lessons as the activity of sailing. It teaches teamwork, engineering, history, patience, oceanography, ecology…all in one fell swoop.” (American Sailing Association)  Porpoise is registered as a Recreational Boating School.  This means that there is an underlying sail training element in all of our charters, designed to teach our guests safety and competency while enjoying the marine environment. Both John and Lyza are Canadian Recreational Yachting Association  coastal skippers. John is a certified sailing instructor able to qualify candidates for competent crew, day skipper, and coastal skipper levels of competency.

Summer guests are given instruction in water safety and can receive training at an appropriate level of sail training during their time with us.  We have course manuals that can be purchased and studied before the trip so that the practical skills and applications can be mastered on the water. This can be as fundamental as an introduction to sailing or involve more advanced levels up to coastal skipper certification.

Special five day, four night trips are organized in the spring or fall for sail training. Men and women sail training trips (up to a maximum of six people at a time) can be an opportunity to learn a new skill with a friend, have an adventure on the water and make progress toward being able to handle your own boat or a chartered boat.
